Gymtopia is now gaining momentum

Here is further information on Gymtopia, an exciting new project I am launching over the next few months:

What is Gymtopia?

Gymtopia will be a digital platform with one simple aim; to discover, capture and share the wider social good undertaken by the world’s health clubs. This achieves two things; it shows the social impact projects that are already taking place, and critically, encourages other clubs to do the same.

Below is a 6-minute video that discusses Gymtopia’s big idea:

Gymtopia will be a digital platform with one simple aim; to discover, capture and share the wider social good undertaken by the world’s health clubs. This achieves two things; it shows the social impact projects that are already taking place, and critically, encourages other clubs to do the same.

What I believe

The global health club industry is an influential community of more than 133,000 clubs comprising 128 million members. Health clubs enrich their members’ lives but I believe they should be doing more to enrich communities as well. So, through Gymtopia, I want clubs and their members to direct some of their influence to support what I call social impact projects.

More about Gymtopia

I see Gymtopia as a simple story telling platform. Stories that explain how health clubs and industry suppliers are collaborating with their members to collect food, raise money, donate shoes, give clothing and many other projects that create a social impact. The stories I discover are inspiring and people are often surprised when I share them. The response is often: ‘I did not realise health clubs and suppliers did that’. Well they do and here are some examples:

Sports World launches a programme called ‘Activating smiles’. Members are asked to donate a toy, which is to be passed to a child from a poor community.

The result: 3,000 toys are collected.

United Kingdom

The Gym Group adds a simple request to its membership sign-up process: ‘Would you like to make a one-off donation to our charity of the month?

The result: 100,000 people make a donation raising approximately £50,000 for nominated Charities.

Portugal

Vivafit asked members to donate a tin of food each time they worked out during the month of April. The food was being donated to supporting young mothers and their babies.

The result: More than 60,000 items of food were collected, resulting in the largest donation in the 18-year history of the charity.

USA

Planet Fitness ran a membership promotion with the pledge of $10 to the Foundation for Breast cancer Research for each new member signing up.

The result: $600,000 was raised across more than 320 gyms.

Cybex International Inc create the ‘Cybex Pink Ribbon Run’ event. This entails pink treadmills being installed into clubs across the United States designed to promote breast cancer research. Cybex donates ten cents ($0.10) for each mile logged on the pink treadmill.

The result:

$100,000 is donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Guatemala

World Gym of Guatemala creates a project called ‘Basket of Love’. These comprise of Christmas baskets (hampers) donated by members and staff and given to low-income families.

The result: 600 Christmas baskets were distributed.

More can be done

These are great projects but I believe more can be done. More can be achieved by bringing all these projects together to demonstrate what is already taking place. This will then inspire and ‘nudge’ other clubs to do more.

This is why I am developing Gymtopia.

Get involved

If you believe in this project, you can help by:

1 Making a modest one-off financial contribution to kickstart Gymtopia. Small online contributions can be made here on Indiegogo until 8th February 2013:

I can invoice for larger contributions if you are feeling very generous. There are six opportunities to become Founder contributors of Gymtopia where your legacy to this project is guaranteed. Retention Management has already come on board as the first Founder partner.

(Update: 31/01/2012)

Les Mills UK has now joined as the second Founder partner.

Gantner technologies in Austria has now joined as the third Gymtopia Founder partner.

2 Suggesting a company for me to approach who can help kickstart the project.

3 Sending me a 2-line comment capturing your thoughts on Gymtopia that may persuade others to get involved.

4 Mentioning Gymtopia on social networks.

5 Liking the Gymtopia Facebook page.

6 Following Gymtopia’s progress on Twitter

I would appreciate any of the above.
