Credit-crunching ‘budget gyms’ spreading across the UK

Recently, I wrote that the UK has not seen too many new clubs open during the first quarter of 2009. In fact, there were just seven new club openings. However, when I delved a little deeper, I saw that one of these new clubs was a low-cost or ‘budget’ club that opened in Surrey (South East England). Membership can be purchased online for £14.99 per month.

There is a lot of buzz around these new super-value clubs which are now slowly starting to appear in the UK, following a slow start (relative to Germany, Holland and the United States). The four UK brands already trading (The Gym Group, FitSpace, Fitness4Less and MiFit) will shortly be joined by several others that are presently in development. Presently, I am retained by a company that has ambitious plans for a new budget gym brand, and there are other teams looking at 2009/2010 launch.

So, here is my 2009 prediction. By December 2009, we should see the number of UK low-cost gyms (price point of approximately £15 per month), rise from the present 12 to 30.
